We can all learn from Hess Toy Truck's holiday marketing campaign!

Every year my nephews beg for the new Hess Toy Truck for Christmas. They see the commercials on TV and can tell me exactly what the newest truck is capable of; what kind of gadgets it has and how many lights or sirens it comes with.

This year, I was unable to purchase the trucks at a local Hess gas station because here in the Northeast, all of the Hess stations have turned to Speedway stations. That said, I had to go online to order the trucks.

Hess has done a remarkable job of making the transition from in-store to online purchasing easy and I was impressed with their marketing strategy this year for a handful of reasons. What they did isn’t rocket science, but they executed a highly successful campaign we can all learn a thing or two from.

  1. They started marketing early. 
    By Thanksgiving I began seeing commercials on all kid and friendly – family TV stations. I also heard the jingle on the radio. My nephews were already getting psyched for this year’s toy and could tell me it was a red fire truck that came with a little fire rescue vehicle.
  2. They knew their audience.
    Hess carefully selected their audience – kids and parents. I didn’t see the commercials on MTV when I was watching Teen Mom or The Challenge, (my guilty pleasure is trashy reality TV…) but I did see the commercials on Fox News Channel, ABC Family etc. The commercial had a catchy jingle both kids and parents would end up humming all day long (the get this out of my head kind of jingle), and it featured happy kids playing with the trucks, making all 4-10 year old boys jealous.
  3. They made it easy.
    I do almost all of my holiday shopping online, but a lot of people still prefer to do things the good old fashioned way. The Hess Toy Truck commercial clearly outlined the only way to purchase this year was to go to HessToyTruck.com. (Notice they kept the URL simple too.) By keeping it simple and giving clear instructions they made even the “I’m nervous to shop online” customer the confidence to go online and order. The website was easy to use when you got there and you didn’t have to click around or search to find your product, you simply added the truck to your cart and went through the checkout process.
  4. They had great follow up.
    As soon as I ordered my trucks I got an email confirmation and various follow up emails about the shipping status. The trucks came in just a few days time and the shipping was free which was great. One of the biggest things marketers forget about is follow up. When’s the last time you sent someone an email just to see how they liked your eBook or if they had given any thought to your proposal? Or sent an email to remind people to follow you on Twitter, FB or Instagram?
  5. They went social.
    The thing that impressed me most with Hess Toy Truck was the email I got (timed perfectly) on Christmas Eve. It simply said:
    Hess Toy Truck can teach us all a lesson or two about holiday marketing!
    Not only did they send a friendly follow up email, they asked customers to use hashtag #2015HessToyTruck. This is a brilliant idea! A trending hashtag is an awesome marketing strategy and Hess will have photos to share for days if only a fraction of customers actually upload photos and use the hashtag. The point is, they went out of their way to ask. They sent a simple email, gave clear instructions and made it easy for customers to join in on the holiday action.

Next time you want to promote a new product, an eBook or idea think about Hess Toy Truck and keep things simple. Start early, know your audience, make downloading or purchasing easy and remember to follow up in a social way!

Facebook Posts that Increase Engagement

Want to increase your Facebook engagement? Here are some tips to get your fans commenting and liking like crazy!

  1. Ask a Question

  3. Make it Fun

One of the best ways to increase engagement is by posting great content. When you want a commenting or liking boost consider posting a fun question or ask your fans for their feedback. People love when you ask for opinions!

Make sure anything you post to FB includes a link or a photo. Photos perform better in the FB Newsfeed algorithm than a text-only post so I can’t stress enough how important it is to have great pictures! You can find free stock photos on a variety of sites or you can make your own graphics with apps like Canva and PicMonkey. I prefer Canva because they have a variety of pre-made templates that make choosing fonts and colors easy!

Increase your Facebook Engagement with Creative Question Posts and Eye Catching Graphics

It’s also important to keep your questions timely and relevant to your page. Holidays are great talking points and it’s also fun to check out “weird and wacky” events that are happening everyday like National Donut Day or National Spring Cleaning Week etc. I also love to ask people “Would you Rather” type questions because they don’t even have to think of an answer – they just pick A or B and it’s easy!

It’s important to make sure your questions are fun and won’t incite a FB debate on your timeline or offend any potential customers. If you have a fashion site and you want to ask – “Who wore it better:  Hillary Clinton or Carly Fiorina?” – that’s fine, but don’t go asking people who they’d rather vote for etc.

People love to talk about their family, kids, pets and to share their opinions so when you’re coming up with questions keep those topics in mind, then tailor them to your brand and use your own voice!

When it comes to creating graphics make sure your text is easy to read and I recommend using no more than 2 fonts. If you use Canva take note of the fonts in their pre-made templates (these are made by professional designers); if you change the fonts keep in mind what made them work – was one tall and thin and the other was curvy and bold? There’s a reason those fonts were chosen – because they complimented each other. Unless you have design experience stick with suggested fonts or similar options that will also compliment each other.

Keep in mind colors that will compliment your brand and your social media pages or website when creating branded graphics. Did you know when a magazine goes to print the entire 100+ pages must contain the same color scheme and fonts? Imagine your FB page and website are going to print – will they compliment each other?

As the holidays draw near it’s more important than ever to begin promoting your products! Pinterest is an awesome social media site for eCommerce sellers that lets you do just that. By creating Pinterest boards that others want to follow, your products can be viewed by countless potential customers – the key is to get creative with your boards! The most popular categories on Pinterest are as follows:

If you’re selling on Etsy you don’t need to change your product links because when you renew a listing the URL stays the same, but if you’re selling on eBay consider linking your pins to the appropriate category within your store instead of the exact item. This can be tedious but it’s worth it – you don’t want to send people to a link that says the product is no longer listed or the item has been sold.

How Do You Plan to Shop for the Holidays?

I’ve been blogging for one of my clients and thought this article was helpful for those still debating whether to shop online or in-store this holiday season.  My client, Good Buys All the Time, is an online retailer so I wanted to talk about the convenience of online shopping, but I didn’t want to sound one sided.  I put together a well researched list of pros and cons and decided to let readers decide for themselves.  There are definitely some items that I know I personally cannot shop for online – things like jeans or pants that I need to fit on first.  But I have had success ordering items like books, jewelry and electronics online.  How do you plan to shop on Black Friday?

With the holidays approaching we face the great debate of online or in-store. Do you stand in line for Black Friday savings or wait until Cyber Monday to cash in on all of the great deals? If you’re brave enough to face the crowds, you’re sure to nab some holiday deals at the big-box stores, but is it worth the chaos? From my experience, shopping online offers the convenience and safety I prefer.  But if you’re still weighing the pros and cons, here are some things to consider.

Shopping Online vs. Shopping In-Store

  • When you shop in-store you are forced to deal with crowds of people and long check-out lines.
  • When you shop online you can avoid the crowds and check-out is just a few clicks away.
  • When you shop in-store you can see the product and get a better idea of its value, durability and size.
  • When you shop online you must rely on product descriptions and customer reviews.
  • When you shop in-store you may wait in line for hours, just to find out the store has sold-out of your big ticket item.
  • When you shop online you know right away if a product is available and can select from various shipping options to determine how soon you’ll receive it.
  • When you shop in-store for clothing, shoes and accessories, know that the store has limited quantities of select colors and sizes.
  • When you shop online there’s a better chance you’ll find the colors and sizes you need, without having to search.
  • When you shop in-store it’s easy to exchange and return items… Not always the case. They may send you to the customer service desk for exchanges and returns where you’ll likely join a long line of other disgruntled customers.
  • When you shop online it’s difficult to exchange and return items… Not always the case.  Most products come with simple step by step directions should you need to return or exchange, and some sellers will even pay the return shipping!
  • When you shop in-store you can save money with coupons and in-store specials.
  • When you shop online you can save money with coupon codes and online specials.

In the end, it comes down to what works for you.  If you plan to do all of your Christmas shopping at the last minute, going to a store may be your best bet; but if you plan to start your shopping on Black Friday, why not avoid the crowds and shop online? You’ll receive your products in plenty of time for Christmas and have time for returns and exchanges if necessary.  Less time spent waiting in lines means more time for family, baking cookies and decorating the tree!
